raise your own nucleus colony

For this program, we purchase and supply queens from a commercial supplier.  Under supervision you will set up a nucleus hive at the club apiary.  A corflute nuc and frames of brood from the club hives are provided.  Over the next weeks we assist with inspections; monitoring release and commencement of laying.

The program will extend over a month requiring weekly weekend apiary visits. On completion you will take the nuc home to install in your own hive.

Dates are provisional and depend on queen supply and weather.  There is some flexibility with inspection dates which should allow a certain amount of individual variation.

Due to limited resources this program is available to members only and capped at 10 places.  Our intention is to assist new members who have just completed a beginners course in getting a flying start.

Last year's program was an outstanding success with all participants happily installing their bees at home following completion.  It was noticeable how quickly handling skills and confidence were built.
